What Happens In Vegas

May 24th, 2008 by Beat Casinos, How To Beat The Casinos, www.howtobeatthecasinos.com

So the new “What Happens In Vegas” movie is out now in cinemas around the world. It seems to be rating well: number 3 in America, and number 1 in several international markets like Australasia – at the time of writing at least.

The storyline is simple. Starring Cameron Diaz, Ashton Kutcher, and Queen Latifah, What Happens In Vegas is a fun romantic romp where two random strangers wake up in a Vegas hotel room and discover that they got married to each other during a night of drunken debauchery. They also learn that one of them also won a huge jackpot while playing slots with the other’s quarter. They must then spend the entire day retracing their steps to figure out who owns the lucky coin and who is legally entitled to the jackpot.

My personal opinion is that the movie is a bit of fun – but it doesn’t closely represent any Vegas holiday I’ve ever taken. Well, ok, the “too much to drink” bit might, on an odd occasion. The winning a slot jackpot (but not huge) might too. But none of the surprise marriage, and debauchery!

What is nice in the film are the various shots of the Vegas Strip and Downtown areas, and the “inside casino” photography. I’ll admit that it made me feel very jealous that I’m not in Las Vegas right now. Seeing those beautiful hotels and casinos in full cinema resolution made me feel almost like I was there. **Sigh**.

Should you go and see it? If romantic comedies are your thing, why not? If you’re after a serious hour and a half of Vegas magic as we gamblers understand it, you’ll be disappointed. Still, a good bit of fun all around. Seen the movie? Let me know your thoughts.

It’s Time For Casino War

May 23rd, 2008 by Beat Casinos, How To Beat The Casinos, www.howtobeatthecasinos.com

I’ve often remarked in this Beat the Casinos blog that I liken a casino player walking into a casino with an aim to take home some of the house’s money as a kind of “casino war”. After all, glamour stripped aside, both sides are trying furiously to take as much money from the other as possible, as quickly as possible. So it’s perhaps of no surprise that you can now play “Casino War” in many casinos (including Betfair Casino). Casino War has in fact been around for quite a few years, but has only really become popular online during the last 6 – 12 months.

Casino War Gameplay
Casino War is (generally) played with one deck of 52 cards – but some casinos use up to 6 or 8 decks at a time. A player places their bet in the betting circle. They get one card, the dealer gets one card. The highest value card wins! If both the player and the dealer get the same value card (i.e. both get a Queen) then they go to war. The player doubles their bet. A further card is drawn for the dealer and the player. The highest card wins the war.

It seems like a fairly even game – but it isn’t, because when you go to “war”, the player has to double their original bet but the dealer only pays even money if the player wins. If the player loses, the dealer takes BOTH bets! Alternatively the player can decide not to go to war and surrender their hand – but in doing so they lose their original bet. Additionally, there’s a side bet available where a player can bet on both the player and dealer getting the same value card (before any cards are dealt). Like the Tie bet in Baccarat, this is a BAD BET with a HIGH house edge. Avoid the TIE bet, like you’d aim to avoid a swarm of bees!

Casino War House Advantage
Go to war on ties: 2.88%
Surrender on ties: 3.7%
Bet on ties: 18.65%

Should you play Casino War?
If you’re going to play Casino War (and it is a fun game), play it only in short doses, and be careful of your bet size (the smaller the better is recommended). This really is a game for those players who prefer “luck games” rather than “skill games”. Most land based casinos have a typical betting spread of $5 – $1000 per hand for this game – although online, its not uncommon to find bets as low as $1 available. This MIGHT give some players who like “martingale” type betting strategies a reasonable spread but be VERY CAREFUL. Here at Beat the Casinos blog we generally advise AGAINST Martingale betting strategies – they’re dangerous!

So where can you play Casino War? It’s available at Betfair Casino.

Blackjack For Card Counters

May 23rd, 2008 by Beat Casinos, How To Beat The Casinos, www.howtobeatthecasinos.com

Many casinos (online, and land-based) fear blackjack card counters - and as a result, many casinos aim to ban card counters from playing their games. Cantor Casino have taken a different stance: they not only actively encourage blackjack card counters to play their games, but they provide gaming software that will actually count the cards for you! This is very UNIQUE from my experience.

This blackjack variation is called “Statjack™”. Simply described, Cantor Casino Statjack™ is a special version of Blackjack that has been enhanced with on-screen tools to assist you interactively. The tools include counting cards as they are dealt (for you, automatically), and providing statistics that help you make better tactical decisions. Statjack™ is played with four 52-card decks. The object of the game is to get more points than the Dealer without getting more than 21 points (i.e. without going bust).

Game play in Cantor Casino Statjack™ is identical to normal play: Each Player hand and also the Dealer, is dealt two cards. The Dealer has one card face up and one card face down (the “Hole card”).

Each card has its face value except the Jack, Queen and King, which have a value of ten, and the Ace which counts as the better of one or eleven, depending on the circumstance. If your first two cards total 21, congratulations! You have a Blackjack and will be paid 3 to 2 on your bet, although if the dealer also has Blackjack, the hand is a “Push” – you do not win but you don’t lose.

If the total of your first two cards is less than 21, you can Hit, Split, Double Down, or Stand. If you want another card, press Hit and the Dealer will deal you an additional card. You Hit when you feel your hand needs more points in order to win. But if that next card takes you over 21 points, you “Bust” and lose.

Choosing to Stand means you’re satisfied with your cards. Once you have finished playing all of your hands, the Dealer’s hand will be played out and then you will see whether you have won or not. The Dealer must draw on a hand total of 16 or less. If the total is 17 or more, the Dealer must stand, unless it is a Soft 17, in which case the dealer must hit.

So, you’ll be thinking, if the cards are counted for me, what’s in this game for the house? Surely they must lose long term? Well, there’s two things to be aware of: 1) The cards are “cut” after shuffling, and the cut card is placed at a random spot in the shoe. The shoe is reshuffled after the cut card is drawn from the shoe. Sometimes this cut might be three decks deep, sometimes it might be one. So that’s a consideration. Card counters know that the best opportunities often come along later in a shoe dealt game – you may not always get that chance here. And 2) the game offers some optional side bets on the total score of the dealers cards / players cards etc. As always, our “Beat the Casinos” blog recommendation is this: DON’T PLAY BLACKJACK SIDE BETS.

If you’re a skilled blackjack player, this game is potentially beatable (although luck will be the deciding factor on the day). Cantor Casino will accept high betting limits, so truly skilled players can really “go to war”. :-)

Like the other casinos promoted on my blog, I’m a player here too – I’ve played the games, I know what they’re like. And Cantor Casino offer a free 50GBP matchplay to new members too. Once you’ve placed 5000GBP worth of bets you can become a VIP and get access to all sorts of extra promotions – very worthwhile!

Visit Cantor Casino today – they’re Malta licensed, and fully backed by a very reputable and established Financial Services company. Good luck!

Cyberslotz UK (who have free casino games to play, free online slots – or you can play casino games for cash etc) have made their normal cash match promotion even better. Instead of matching up to 50GBP per new player, this month, until the end of May 2008, they’re matching first deposits of up to 100GBP – but only to our very special blog readers!

I was already running an ADDITIONAL promotion on top of this, from my OWN money, giving you 10GBP as a thank you for joining via this blog. As Cyberslotz have so generously doubled their match play for this month, I’m going to double my original offer too – so I’m now going to give you 20GBP if you join Cyberslotz during May via this blog, and meet the playthrough requirements. That’s 20GBP of my own money!

Just think: you deposit 100GBP. You get 100GBP matchplay. Hopefully at the end of the session you’ll be up and cashing out with good profits! Worst case though, whether you win or lose in that session, I’ll be giving you 20GBP back! This free 20GBP of personal cash is a Beat the Casinos blog EXCLUSIVE offer. I doubt you’ll find it anywhere else on the web (but if you do, let me know)!

Here’s how you do it: follow THIS LINK to the Cyberslotz website. You’ll probably see a banner saying they’re giving you 50GBP free. On the right hand top side of their page there’s a button saying “Login”. Press this. Now you’ll be given the “secret access” to the 100GBP matchplay!

In order to qualify for my promotion, deposit at least 20GBP (and a maximum of 100GBP) and get your matchplay, and then simply meet the playthrough requirements mentioned on the site. Once you’ve done this let me know via email at davewestlondon@yahoo.co.uk and I’ll arrange to send you your free 20GBP from me!

Cyberslotz UK is open to wider UK residents only. They have a great range of UK slot machines and UK fruit machines to play (such as BarX), and the full range of normal casino games: blackjack, roulette, sic bo, carribean stud poker etc.

How Beginners Can Win at Online Poker, by Alex McCay

While some online poker players grasp the game and start winning right way, others may struggle to succeed. While it is a truism that online Texas Holdem is a game that allows a lot of improvement with experience, gaining that experience can be costly. This being the case, it is better for the beginner to take some steps to speed up their learning process.

Check Out Online Poker Tips
Many online poker sites have “House pros” who offer tips you can read right on the site. Some of these tips are geared especially for beginners and are a great way for new online poker players to get a head start on the competition.

Watch Online Poker Games
You can watch online poker games for free. Watching games at all levels is a great way to get a feel for how people play, which techniques are effective and which ones are not.

Texas Hold Em Poker

Be sure to watch for a while to get a true feel. Who wins one pot or even a few in a row can just be a measure of luck and not tell you much about skilled play.

Read a Poker Book
There are plenty of poker books out there and some are even geared specifically towards online poker play. You’ll definitely need to augment these books with personal experience, but if you study the books well, they can start paying dividends almost immediately.

You may find that early in your online poker career you are making more mistakes than you would like. This will change as you play, and if you follow the suggestions above, you should be able to make your way up the learning curve much more quickly. And, don’t forget to have fun!
