Single-Zero, Double-Zero and Triple-Zero Roulette: The Las Vegas Cost Comparison
Roulette is one of the easiest casino games to recognise and one of the easiest to misunderstand. The wheel looks almost identical from table to table, the betting layout contains the same familiar numbers, and every spin creates the same moment of suspense. Yet one small difference can more than triple the casino’s mathematical advantage.
That difference is the number of green zero pockets. A single-zero wheel has 37 pockets: numbers 1 through 36 plus zero. A double-zero wheel has 38, adding 00. A triple-zero wheel has 39, adding a third green result that may be displayed as 000 or another symbol. The additional pockets do not create more winning numbers for an ordinary red, black, odd, even, high or low bet. They create more ways for those bets to lose.
For a Las Vegas visitor who enjoys roulette, choosing the wheel is the most important strategic decision. No pattern, staking progression or lucky-number theory can compensate for accepting a much larger house edge.
The basic arithmetic of an even-money bet
Consider a $10 bet on red. There are 18 red numbers on every standard wheel. On a single-zero game, there are 18 winners and 19 losers among 37 pockets. A win pays $10 and a loss costs $10. The expected result per bet is therefore negative by one unit spread across 37 possible outcomes, giving the casino an edge of 1 divided by 37, or about 2.70 percent.
On a double-zero wheel, the same bet has 18 winning pockets and 20 losing pockets. The expected loss is two units across 38 outcomes, producing a house edge of 2 divided by 38, or about 5.26 percent.
Add a third zero and there are 18 winners against 21 losers. The expected loss becomes three units across 39 outcomes, equal to about 7.69 percent. The colour bet has not become more exciting or more skilful. It has simply become much more expensive.
These percentages apply to most conventional bets on their respective wheels because roulette payouts are based on a 36-number structure even when zero pockets are present. A straight-up number pays 35 to 1, as though there were only 36 possible results. The zero or zeros create the casino advantage.
What the difference means in dollars
Suppose you make 60 bets of $20 during an hour. That is $1,200 of total action. On single-zero roulette with a 2.70 percent edge, the theoretical loss is about $32.40. On double-zero at 5.26 percent, it is about $63.12. On triple-zero at 7.69 percent, it is about $92.28.
You will almost never lose exactly those amounts in a particular hour. Roulette results swing far more widely. You might hit a number and finish well ahead, or suffer a run that consumes the session bankroll. Expected loss is a long-run average, not a forecast. Its value is comparison: it shows the price of choosing one wheel rather than another.
At the same stake and pace, moving from triple-zero to single-zero reduces the expected hourly loss in this example by nearly $60. That saving is larger and more dependable than anything offered by a betting progression. You do not need to predict a spin. You simply need to read the wheel before buying chips.
Why the betting system cannot change the edge
Roulette systems usually alter the size or placement of wagers according to previous results. The Martingale doubles after losses. Other progressions increase after wins, follow number patterns or move across sectors of the layout. These approaches change volatility and the sequence in which wins and losses arrive, but they do not change the probability or payout of the underlying bets.
If a red bet carries a 5.26 percent edge on a double-zero wheel, it carries that edge whether the wager is $5, $10 or $160. Doubling after losses can generate many small winning sequences, which makes the system feel successful. Occasionally, however, an ordinary run of losing spins demands very large wagers. The player eventually reaches a table limit, a bankroll limit or a personal limit.
Previous spins do not make the opposite colour due. Ten black results in a row do not alter the physical composition of the wheel on the next spin. Red still has 18 winning pockets, while black and the zeros remain against it. The display of recent results is entertaining information, not a forecast.
Outside bets are calmer, not cheaper by percentage
Red-black, odd-even and high-low bets win frequently and pay even money. Dozens, columns and six-line bets cover fewer numbers and pay more. Straight numbers win rarely and pay 35 to 1. On a normal American double-zero wheel, these standard bets generally retain the same 5.26 percent house edge, apart from a notorious special bet involving 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 that is worse.
The difference is variance. An outside bet produces smaller, more frequent wins and losses. A straight-up number produces many losing spins and an occasional large payout. If your priority is making a session last, lower-volatility outside wagers and smaller stakes may be easier on the bankroll, even though the percentage edge is unchanged.
Covering more numbers does not create value if the total payout remains priced to the same wheel. A player who scatters chips across the layout may win something on many spins, but the total amount won must be compared with the total amount wagered. A $5 return after staking $20 is still a $15 loss.
French rules can improve an even-money bet
Some single-zero games offer rules known as la partage or en prison on even-money wagers. Under la partage, when zero appears, the player loses only half the even-money bet. This can reduce the house edge on those wagers to about 1.35 percent. En prison holds the wager for another spin under specified conditions and can produce a similar mathematical effect.
These rules are valuable, but you must verify that the table actually offers them and understand how they are applied. A European-looking wheel does not automatically guarantee a half-loss rule. Read the placard and ask the dealer if necessary.
When available at an affordable minimum, single-zero roulette with a favourable zero rule is among the better conventional roulette choices. It still has a casino advantage. “Better” means a lower expected cost, not a reliable route to profit.
Table minimums complicate the comparison
A superior wheel often carries a higher minimum. This creates a practical decision. A $25 single-zero table may have a lower edge but produce more expected loss per spin than a $5 double-zero table because the wager is five times larger.
For example, a $25 wager at 2.70 percent has an expected cost of about 67.5 cents per spin. A $5 wager at 5.26 percent costs about 26.3 cents per spin. The lower-edge game is mathematically better per dollar wagered, but the smaller double-zero bet is cheaper in absolute terms.
This does not make double-zero preferable in general. It shows why both house edge and total action matter. Compare the amount you will actually wager, not only the headline percentage. If you can bet $10 on single-zero instead of $10 on double-zero, the choice is clear. If the minimums differ sharply, calculate the likely hourly cost.
Pace is part of the price
A live dealer table with several players may produce fewer decisions per hour than an electronic terminal. Rapid roulette can allow repeated wagers with very little pause. Even if the wheel and edge are identical, the faster game can cost more per hour because it generates more total action.
At $10 per spin, 40 decisions produce $400 of action. Two hundred electronic decisions produce $2,000. With a 5.26 percent edge, the expected costs are about $21 and $105 respectively. Speed rarely feels like a rule, but it has a direct mathematical effect on the entertainment budget.
Use the time between live spins to decide calmly rather than stacking last-second bets. Take breaks, avoid automatic repeat features when they make you lose track of volume, and set a session finishing time. Fewer wagers at the same edge mean less expected loss.
What to check before sitting down
Count the zero pockets or read the table sign. Do not assume every roulette game in the same casino uses the same wheel. Check the table minimum and remember that the minimum may apply to the total outside action, individual inside chips or both. Ask the dealer if the layout is unclear.
Look for la partage or en prison wording on a single-zero game. Avoid the five-number basket bet on double-zero roulette, since its payout produces a particularly high edge. Decide on a stable wager and a session budget before the first spin.
If the only affordable choice is triple-zero, walking away is a rational option. Las Vegas offers countless other activities, and a casino game does not become good value merely because a seat is available. Waiting for another table, visiting a different property or shortening the session can save more than changing number selections.
A sensible roulette plan
For a recreational player, the plan can be remarkably simple. Prefer single-zero at a comparable stake. Use favourable zero rules when available. Choose lower-variance bets if playing time matters, keep the wager small, avoid progressions and control the number of decisions.
None of those choices predicts where the ball will land. That is precisely why they are useful: they do not depend on prediction. They focus on the elements a player can genuinely control—the wheel, the rules, the wager, the pace and the time spent playing.
Roulette will always produce streaks that look meaningful. Enjoy the theatre without confusing it for evidence. A disciplined player can cheer a lucky number while still recognising that the wheel has no memory and that the green pockets determine the long-run price.
